Cultural construction

On the site of a former quarry, a new attraction will be used to visualize the volcanic origins of the basalt quarry. The new building of a hotel and an exhibition center is intended to create a new tourist destination and meeting point for the “Am Gaulberg” catchment area – near Frankfurt am Main.

The architectural concept envisages dividing the spatial program volume into two building complexes. Like an uncovered geological find, the lower building complex with various exhibition rooms protrudes above the quarry and forms a counterpart to the quarry’s hill. It fits into the landscape as a clearly contoured and unambiguous building. Half-tucked into the slope, it is aligned with the quarry and deliberately lets the quarry be the main actor. The second building complex contains hotel rooms and is rotated 90°, floating above the exhibition center to provide a 360° panoramic view and to make perfect use of the path of the sun. The resulting free level between the two actors can be used in a double function as an exhibition area and as a viewing platform for lingering. The landscape area leads walkers and visitors via a serpentine-like access path through the property to the main entrance of the building. This access route continues like a ramp into the interior of the building, through the open atrium to the viewing platform and offers a panoramic view of the water of the quarry. The planning concept of this ensemble creates an eventful exploration of the exhibition center.
