Culture and living space
The basic idea of the design is to reduce the lack of public and culturally used spaces in the Biebrich district. The special water location on the bank also plays a larger role. The Kultursteg winds horizontally and vertically across the water like a wave, repeatedly touching the Biebrich shore. The main entrance is at the Biebricher Zollspeicher. This creates an intermediate layer that allows the Rhine to merge with the bank. Thanks to the inclusion of the water surface, the form and function of the existing promenade will not be disturbed. It still serves as a local transport zone and public square.
Due to its shape, the jetty includes several leisure activities. By folding up and lowering, new rooms or high points are created, which are always accompanied by varying seating options. The wide range of public functions offers an opportunity to use the special nature of the waterfront location as a building block for the “social city”. The focus is on the customs storage, which accommodates several functions. On the one hand, this is a small cultural center with a media library and work rooms and on the other hand it is a youth hostel, which makes it possible to introduce travelers to the Steg’s offerings.
