Siedlung Klarenthal
Design study
Urban planning, housing and habitat
The Klarenthal is a district in the northwest of Wiesbaden. It is accessed from the south via Goerdeler Street. The name goes back to the former Klarenthal monastery, some of which is still preserved and is located in the north of the settlement. The large housing estate was designed in the 1960s on a vacant farmland on the outskirts of Wiesbaden by architect Ernst May and built by the “Nassauische Heimstätte” housing company. The existing building, which was also designed by Ernst May, is on Hermann-Brill-Straße in the northwest of the settlement. It has 13 floors and 56 residential units and is defined as just under 38 meters in HR. This basic structure was used a further 4 times in the adjacent area at different heights. The 5 houses on Hermann-Brill-Straße are typical witnesses of the 1970s prefabricated buildings, with all their advantages and disadvantages in terms of sound, fire and heat insulation.
