Blumenbunker
Cultural building
Our design contribution consists of converting a former air raid shelter from the Second World War into a “House of Building Culture”. The location on Blumenstrasse – near the Viktualienmarkt in Munich – will revitalize a central and representative location.
The listed high-rise bunker on Blumenstrasse dates from the Second World War. The floor plan of the building is square, the edges measure around 14 meters. The six-story building is surrounded by external walls that are up to 1.30 meters thick. The existing entrance including the outside staircase and the tent roof will be completely removed. This is replaced by a translucent structure that nestles against the existing cubature. The modern building forms the new entrance area as well as a new access to the individual floors and serves as a second escape route. Furthermore, the modern extension enables a spacious and open exhibition area in the existing building. The part of the building that protrudes from the top is used as a restaurant and offers a breathtaking view of the old town.
